Hat Yai – Padang Besar – Hat Yai Transport

Padang Besar is a border town in Sadao District Songkhla Province. Located 50 km from Hat Yai town center, approximately 1 hour’s travel time by car or Minivan. The same name Padang Besar is also a border town in Malaysia, northern tip of Perlis state.

Padang Besar is also the gateway of SRT – State Railway of Thailand and KTM of Malaysia’s connection point. The railway link connects Kuala Lumpur to Bangkok, further to Vientiane in Laos. Then continue to Kunming via China – Laos Railway Link.

Padang Besar used to be the main border crossing checkpoint for both road and rail transports between Thailand and Malaysia prior to the opening of the North-South Express [E1] in Malaysia. After which, Sadao checkpoint and Bukit Kayu Hitam checkpoint in Malaysia become the main checkpoint or road transport. But, the railway link in Padang Besar remains to be the major cross-border trade checkpoint especially for rail transport. Padang Besar checkpoint and Sadao checkpoint combined contributes the highest cross-border trade value in Thailand.
